Still
some problems for me with zoom, but luckily
it has now become a habit to send the
painting, in advance on the web site, with a
list of suggested colours, brushes etc. This
week it is Lac de Ste Croix, & I have added
some masking tape to block off the lake from
the beach & the greenery/village
houses/mountains & sky. There do always seem
to be mountains at the very least in
paintings of Provence.
So
everyone has already started, & again we
have a student from Australia, & another
from London which lends a certain je ne sais
quoi to the gathering. In fact I have been
pondering how this will work if/when we
manage to exit from the lockdown
restrictions. Hopefully we Provençaux can
gather as before in the house & garden of
one of our group, & still have a zoom
connection for those from afar.
I’m not
hugely confident with technical matters &
far prefer to wield a paint brush, but there
are others in the group who know what
they’re doing, plus our wonderful web
master, so am sure we’ll manage. Strangely
the whole idea to start with was to gather
together in a small group of amateur artists
who were enthusiastic about watercolours as
a medium, & wanted to be shown how to splash
it about to some decent effect. The key
thing seems to be the pleasure gained by
simple images of the sky & scenery all
around us, & painting together is good fun,
& very bonding. As the landscapes seem to
take up most of the two hours we have
allotted online, we have been missing the
usual ‘add on’ of a flower, or experiment
with salt & cling film. I have also sent off
for some granulation medium to add a
different type of texture, so that is
another treat to come.
Meanwhile I have sent the link to a zen
painting by Jeanne Carbonetti, from her book
The Tao of watercolour, which can be found
on utube. A way of just letting the paint
flow, & with a few judicious shaping lines
for the vase, & vague outlining of the petal
& leaf shapes, you have a calm way of
portraying a colourful vase of flowers.
Hopefully another way to relax & enjoy the
effects of lovely colours & shapes, & to
spend a couple of hours in the company of
likeminded painters…..
